Patrolman James Archuleta was killed in an automobile accident when his patrol car struck a cow on US 84 near Espanola, New Mexico, at approximately 11:00 pm.

He was responding to a local hospital to investigate a shooting when the accident occurred. The impact caused his patrol car to overturn and he was ejected from the vehicle.

Patrolman Archuleta was a member of the US Marine Corps Reserves and had served with the New Mexico State Police for 2 years. He is survived by his daughter, son, and fiancee.

Deputy James McGrane was shot and killed while making a traffic stop on Highway 337 at 12:46 am.

Unknown to Deputy McGrane, the driver of the vehicle was wanted for a 2005 murder. As he approached the vehicle, Deputy McGrane was shot twice and died at the scene from his wounds.

Within minutes of Deputy McGrane calling in the stop, witnesses in the area called 911 to report hearing two gunshots and seeing a white pickup flee the scene.

The suspect was a parolee who had previously served at least six years in jail on unrelated charges. The suspect was apprehended in Juarez, Mexico, on April 3, 2006.

Deputy McGrane had served with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department for 3 years. He had previously served with the New Mexico State Police and United States Postal Inspection Service for a total of 10.5 years. He is survived by his wife, parents, and sister.

Suspect Info: Charged with five counts of murder

Officer Michael King and Officer Richard Smith were shot and killed while attempting to take a man into custody for a mental health evaluation.

The officers located the man at an address near the intersection of Ash Street SE and Gold Avenue SE. They were fired upon immediately upon arriving at the scene. Both officers were transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital where they succumbed to their wounds.

The suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle but was located approximately two hours later. He was injured when the motorcycle crashed as officers attempted to stop him. The suspect was charged with murdering Officer King and Officer Smith. He was also charged with two murders that had been committed earlier in the evening at a local motorcycle store at a fifth murder of a New Mexico Department of Transportation worker that had occurred that morning.

Officer King had served with the Albuquerque Police Department for 22 years. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

Patrolman Christopher Mirabel was killed in a motorcycle accident on North Scenic Avenue in Alamorgodo at 6:55 pm.

His department motorcycle struck a curb and then a tractor trailer that was parked on the roadway.

Patrolman Mirabel had served with the New Mexico State Police for 9 years. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

Officer Germaine Casey succumbed to injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident providing an escort for President George W. Bush. The accident occurred as the motorcade returned to Kirtland Air Force Base.

As the motorcade rounded a curve Officer Casey's motorcycle left the roadway and struck a tree. He was treated by officers and medical personnel on the scene and then transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he died.

Officer Casey had served with the Rio Rancho police department for 2 years and had previously served with the University of New Mexico Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Lieutenant Michael Avilucea was killed in an automobile accident in Rio Arriba County while returning from an operation in which he had assisted with recovering explosives.

His patrol car rolled over as he returned to his normal duty station.

Lieutenant Avilucea had served with the New Mexico State Police for over 26 years, and was commander of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team.
